Jim Lorriman...extraordinary wood turner!

King's Point Pottery Gallery & Studio is very proud to announce we are now showing the amazing work of 
Jim Lorriman. ( We are so excited to have his work here in NL!) Jim's pieces can be found in various collections on every continent except Antarctica.  His work has been purchased by a former US president and been given as gifts to a member of the British Royal Family.  He is represented by a number of galleries across Canada and the United States.

Jim was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada and has made his home near Mansfield, Ontario.  He is self-taught but both his father and grandfather worked wood in their spare time.  Like them he started off in furniture and wooden boat building but left these traditional pursuits to become a full-time wood turner.

Early in his career he came across a book by Dale Nish which described how to make a bowl from a board.  Intrigued, Jim tried this technique and has not looked back.  He took Nish's basic idea and expanded the horizon almost exponentially.  

Jim uses this method to give new life to old wood.  Dock cedar, fallen branches from the forest, stair railings, window frames, historical wood and so on - all have been given new life through Jim's careful nurturing.

Always trying to find new and better ways of making his pieces, Jim is constantly innovating.  He is aware that others may wish to follow him.  To this end he has been making videos of his methods of work and various techniques which he employs.

International limited edition pieces now available.

The 230 individual cups that formed the International craft work " Secret to the return of the cod" are now for sale at King's Point Gallery and Gifts. The complete 12 foot by 8 foot installation was last exhibited in Cheongju South Korea for the Unity and Diversity Exhibition, an invitational event coordinated by both South Korea and the Canadian Craft Federation in 2009.

The piece was originally created for the "Merchant Vessels" exhibition held at The Rooms, the provincial Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador in St John's, NL, Canada. Gloria Hickey curated the 2008 group show and very kindly invited us to be a participant. The following year it was selected to be the gateway work for the Canadian Pavilion overseas in South Korea.

We have been asked by customers for the past 5 years if we would be offering a chance to purchase a piece of the international craft work. This year we finally made the decision to offer it to our customers. We currently have less than 200 cups left (and expect it to be sold out by late summer)... So if you want a cup with a international NL story behind it, please do either contact us via email ( info@kingspointpottery.com ) or drop by our gallery here in King's Point, NL, Canada to get yours before they we are all sold out.

New work for March of Mugs, 2014

We are launching 3 new lines of work at the gallery show and sale curated by Alexis Templeton Gallery, the March of Mugs Show at the Quidi Vidi Plantation, St John's, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. Running: Feb 28 - Mar 01 -Mar 02, 2014.

1. The first is the Tipton Tea Series. Inspired by both the innovative work of Alberta ceramic artist Barbara Tipton and the Newfoundland and Labrador love for tea. Here are a look at the first 3 in what we hope will be a long running series. (Those familiar with Ms Tipton will immediately see we are going in a decidedly different teacup direction from her very fine work.)

Tipton Teacup: inspired by antique Lipton teacup from the 1950's

and some very early 1980's work of Ms Tipton.

Fish Teacup: Newfoundlanders used to be called Fish and fish only refers to cod.

For us it is a bitter sweet cup as the NL fish were nearly destroyed by overfishing.

Beothuk Teacup: the Beothuk were race of people that 

used to live here in NL that are now very sadly extinct. 

Inside the teacup is a view of 2 beothuks paddling a canoe.

2. The second is called the Ballistic Shot Glass Series. Made with the use of a 12 gauge shot gun to decorate the cups. Inspired by the creation of the earth's moon and its highly textured surface.

3. The third is the carved deep blue sea & land series. It features fish, crabs and other land & sea life.

We are still suggesting to our customers to pls call ahead, just to be sure we are not baking cookies or out mummering or...

Our new winter hours are again: Tuesday to Saturday (5 days a week)  10:00 am to 5 pm or by appointment or by chance.

Did you know Trip Advisor currently ranks King's Point Pottery's Newfoundland Craft Shop #1 for shopping (Under "things to do in Newfoundland" please check out the "Shopping Tab" in this link) in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada? (They do... and they also rated us #1 last year!!) And that is in addition to being awarded the years #1 craft shop a.k.a. the outstanding craft shop in Atlantic Canada earlier this year! ( Thanks to the Craft Council of NL for the nomination and the Craft Alliance for their selection!) All in all...it has been a very fortunate year for our Newfoundland craft shop.

So thank you all very much...to everyone out there who helps to make us the #1 Newfoundland Craft Shop! What's next? Well, it is no secret that our long term goal is to eventually become one of the finest Craft Shops in all of Canada. Please stay tuned as we have lots of new craft-artists planned for 2014!

Now that we are into the shoulder season (pre holiday season)...we would like to remind customers that we are still open year round but we do strongly recommend calling ahead. The fall and winter is just 5 days per week : Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm. (Closed Sundays and Mondays.) We will of course be away now and then... between now and next summer. We will post any temporary changes as they occur.

"Coming from a tiny outport of under 650 people, it was particularly thrilling for us to win the highest award in Atlantic Canada. It is quite the contrast when you consider that last years winner was from a town of over 400 thousand. Linda is proud to point out, her home town is in fact the smallest to ever take home the award. And as it has been a decade since a Newfoundland and Labrador company has won this prestigious award, it is truly a provincial celebration for us.

Nominated for #1 Retailer.

First happy new year to all!!

Next a very big thank you goes out from Linda and me, to the the nomination committee of the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador. They have nominated King's Point Pottery Gallery and Gifts for the 2013 Outstanding Retailer for all of Atlantic Canada.

It is a great honour just to be nominated for this top award. So many wonderful craft shops, we have admired forever, from across the four Atlantic Provinces have previously won this coveted award. Places like Paula Cornec's Beavercraft in Stephenville, Barb Roberts' Bogside Gallery in Halifax and of course our very own Craft Council Shop in St John's are but a few to have been recipients of this prestigious honour.

The 16th annual gala ceremony will be held in Halifax, NS on Saturday the 2nd of February 2013 in conjunction with the Atlantic Craft Trade Show, ACTS.  Again our thanks to the Craft Council of Newfoundland and Labrador for their very kind nomination and we have our fingers crossed!

Feast of Pottery, St John's NL Canada

The amazing "Feast of Pottery" will be back in St John's on October the 6th, 2012 running for just 3 days until the 8th. It is a wonderful show and sale of fine ceramic work from North American artists. Arts Quest profiles KPP

Corinne and Gary a.k.a. Arts Quest in NL

Arts Quest ( artsquest.ca) are travelling all across our great nation meeting a huge range of Canadian fine craft persons, fine artists ....and introducing them to the idea of selling their work on line via their (still under construction) e-commerce site/ full featured online marketing shop. Unlike etsy this will be an all and only Canadian site.

Arts Quest sounds like a very solid idea to us and we really encourage you to watch their videos of meeting new craftspeople from all across this diverse country of ours. We very much look forward to learning more about this project as it continues to develop and wish Arts Quest every possible success in their goal of creating the premier online craft/art market site for Canada.

Question: 150 craft/artist equals how many kilometers?????

Question for the day!

Our new 2012 gallery shop space features the work of over 150 craft-artists. Question: What if you wanted (in one giant shopping trip) to visit each and every one of our 150+ Canadian craft persons studio's , "How far would you travel?"

Well, if you happened to (conveniently) start driving from the west coast of Canada, where coincidentally our newest crafts person lives and finished your shopping trip here in the gallery at King's Point, NL...how many kilometers would it all end up to be?

Start the drum roll please.........................the answer is ...............................about 24,000 kms. (Considering you could drive half way around the world with that kind of mileage..it really is a rather big distance.)

Sooo... why not make a very short journey down to our new craft gallery, just 12 km's off the TCH to King's Point  and see all 24,000 kilometers worth of fine Canadian Craft. (Just think, it'll be almost like saving 23, 988 kms!)

Bonavista Social Club visit

Just 15 minutes from Bonavista is the oh so scenic Upper Amherst Cove which is now home to a whole new kind of restaurant and bakery called the Bonavista Social Club, BSC. The Owners are (red seal) Chef Katie Hayes daughter of the well known Patersons (Woodworking next door) and her husband (direct from Dublin, Ireland) Shane Hayes. Linda and I headed over for a birthday supper reservation with friends for 5:00pm on Wednesday August the 15th 2012. (Remember the BSC is currently closed on Mon and Tues.)

1.) The smell of fresh baking was brilliant!... with local bees, local vegetables, local fruit, local eggs....the new 100 meter diet is on! (It's all really good... but the walnut raisin and molasses raisin are "more good-er" as the youngsters always say!)

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm....fresh!

2.) The taste of real woodfired pizza with too many gourmet ingredient choices...some good! (Try Shane's Fav Pizza..mmmmmm...and imagine they start the baking process at 5:30am each day just for you!)

3.) Enjoying the sunset with friends...unforgettable...and a romantic setting for sure.

4.) The look of the desserts was a treat in itself but certainly outdone by the taste!...the black coco carrot cake...words can't do it justice...just don't miss it! (...all served on handmade Paterson Woodworking wooden bowls, trays...)

5.) BSC hospitality means a truly lovely dining experience...and did I mention they ordered the whales over for us to watch while we picked up some extra baked goods to take back home next morning. Yup..2 minke whales, 1 humpback and some dolphins thrown in for good measure! (They say the whales have been there nearly every day for over a month...I guess word on the cooking is really getting around!)
